Head coach of the Washington Freedom– In a significant development for Washington Freedom, former Australian cricket captain and current Delhi Capitals head coach, Ricky Ponting, has been appointed as the team’s new head coach. The announcement follows the recent appointment of Dhiraj Malhotra as the franchise’s CEO, marking the revival of their successful working relationship from the past.
Ponting steps into the shoes of veteran Australian coach Greg Shipperd, and he will be joined by former fierce rival Dale Steyn, along with fellow countrymen Michael Klinger and Burt Cockley, forming a formidable support staff.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Ponting shared, “I’m thrilled to be a part of Washington Freedom in 2024. Cricket’s popularity is on the rise in the US, and I’m eager to contribute to Major League Cricket. While it’s a bit surreal to replace my friend Greg Shipperd, I am ready to build on his foundation and lead the team to success in the upcoming season.”
Get ready for a cricket revolution! 🏏

Owner of Washington Freedom, Sanjay Govil, expressed his vision for the franchise, saying, “Reflecting on the success of MLC’s inaugural season and our ambition to elevate cricket in the USA, we are delighted to welcome Ricky Ponting. His legendary status, leadership, winning mindset, and commitment to nurturing talent align perfectly with our goals.”
Govil added, “Ponting’s understanding of our vision to enhance the sport’s profile in the US and develop local talent resonates with our mission. We are proud to have him on board.”
This move intensifies the Australian influence on the franchise following a strategic alliance with Cricket NSW. In line with the agreement, Freedom sent American-based players, including Andries Gous and Jacobus Pienaar, to Sydney for training in the Cricket NSW ecosystem in January. The stage is set for a promising season under the guidance of Ricky Ponting as Washington Freedom aims to make a mark in Major League Cricket.
